Mini-Grants May Maximize Health in South Carolina June 2008 What if a few strategically given grants of $15,000 each could help a community struggling with chronic disease and physical inactivity get on its feet,
That's the question the University of South Carolina Prevention Research Center (PRC) is trying to answer with a project in Sumter County, a county in the central part of the state that is home to Shaw Air Force Base. The project aims to jumpstart community members' potential for active and healthy lifestyles by offering mini-grants to community organizations, as well as advocacy training and support in building coalitions. We are asking your support as a community partner to make an investment contribution to RACC to offset costs associated with the development of our community park. As a community partner your investment contribution will be eligible for a SC tax credit under the SC Code 12-6-3530, which provides a tax credit against SC. income tax. The amount of credit is 33% for every $1 contributed, with a total credit of $1 million in one year, and $5 million for all years.
Area Residents Beautify Rembert
On Saturday, September 10 The Rembert Area Community Coalition (RACC) and the Youth Community Development Corporation completed another phase of Keep Sumter County Beautiful.
RACC participated in the Sumter County Pride Week which was held April 30-May 7, 2005. Residents from all over the Rembert area collected trash and put it to the side of the road for Sumter County maintenance workers to pick up. The event was a great success and Rembert won one of the $1,000.00 City Challenge Beautification Grant. RACC received a Community Tool Chest and Gardening supplies. These tools were very useful on Saturday were donated by Simpson,s Hardware of Sumter.->
The money from the grant is to be used to beautify an area in Rembert that can be viewed and enjoyed by all. The Inland at Hwy 521 and Pisgah Road was the area selected. The residents and youth from the community center work all day digging through the dry hard solid to plant flowers, shrubberies and trees. Dr. Florence Schanker of Rembert donated the stones to boarder the Inland. If you look close you will see the letter ,R, representing Rembert and it is also bordered by stones. In the near future a WELCOME TO REMBERT sign will be erected at this location. The Inland at Hwy521 and Pisgah Road now has a curb appeal. Check it out!
